A fine example of an 1896 Athens Olympic participation medal in bronze, with the front showing a seated Nike holding a laurel wreath over a phoenix emerging from from flames, with the Acropolis in the background. The reverse shows a Greek legend inside a wreath, and is signed ‘W. Pittner, Wien,” an Austrian die-sinking establishment, where the medals were made in a limited quantity of 20,000. The medal is in excellent overall condition, with minimal imperfections, expected wear, and great patina. Dimensions: Approximately 1 ⅞” inches in diameter (50mm) x .16 inches (4mm) thick. A nice addition to your Olympic collection!
