This nicely detailed tempera painting from Nantucket, Massachusetts was painted by 20th century American artist John Austin (1918-2000). Austin was born in North Carolina and eventually settled in Nantucket, MA, becoming known for his capture of New England culture, as well as commissioned houses portraits and other works. Some of his collectors included Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Mrs. Paul Mellon, and Joyce & Seward Johnson. Tempera on artist board, signed lower right, titled on verso jelly label “John Austin, Nantucket, “Red Barns,” and housed in a white painted inset frame with black border frame.
