This genre oil painting of a nude girl bathing in a fearful pose in the forest was done by German artist August (Von) Kreling (1819-1876). Kreling was born in Osnabruck, Germany and became well known for his figure, landscape, and historical genre paintings. Oil on panel, monogrammed lower right, titled on verso label “Girl Bathing” with provenance inscription from the Thayer family , and housed in a gilt gessoed frame, with some losses. Dimensions: 8 ½” h x 7” w, actual; 13 1/2” h x 12 ¼” w, framed.
