This nice pair of coastal seascapes were painted by American artist Francis Orville Libby (1883-1961). Born in Portland, Maine, Libby went to school at Princeton University, and spent most of his life in Maine, where he became known for is landscapes and coastal views. The left painting is an oil on canvas, signed lower left, and inscribed on verso stretcher “Gaspesie (?), Francis Orville Libby" - possibly Gaspesie peninsula on the eastern coast of Quebec. The right painting is also an oil on canvas, signed lower right, and inscribed on verso stretcher “Cliff House Beach, Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and a separate inscription “Maine Coast, Francis Orville Libby,” along with a partial paper label. Both are framed in matching modern giltwood frames. Dimensions: Each are approximately 14” h x 16” w, actual; 23 ½” h x 25 ½” w, framed.
