This beautiful view of Venice, Italy, circa 1885, was painted by American artist Andrew Fisher Bunner (1841-1897). Bunner was born in New York City, and went to Europe in 1871, studying in Germany, France, and Italy, even living in Venice for three years. His views of Venice are generally off the beaten path, rather than the standard depictions of the great monuments. Many of his Venice sketches were given to the Metropolitan Museum by his widow after his death in 1897. Oil on canvas, signed lower right, and housed in a quality gilt frame. Dimensions: 22” h x 32” w, actual; 29 ½” h x 39 ½” w, framed.
