This tonalist landscape oil painting was done by New York artist Charles P. Appel (1857-1928). Appel was born in Brooklyn, New York and later lived in East Orange, New Jersey, influenced by George Inness and studying under William Merritt Chase and Francis Luis Mora. He became well known for his tonalist and impressionist landscape and marine paintings. Oil on canvas, signed lower left, and housed in a gold gilt frame. Dimensions: 12” h x 16” w, actual; 17 ¾” h x 22” w, framed.
