This nice oil painting of a man under a tree with resting cows was done by New Hampshire White Mountain artist Samuel Lancaster Gerry (1813-1891). Gerry was born in Boston, Massachusetts, where he eventually opened a studio and became one of the leaders of the White Mountain school of painting in the 1840’s, painting in the Hudson River style, with influences thought to include Asher Durand and Thomas Cole. Oil on board, signed lower left, titled “Artist Under a Tree,” and housed in a 19th century gold gilt frame. Dimensions: 6” h x 9 ½” w, actual; 9” h x 12 ⅜” w, framed.
