This vibrant oil painting was done by American artist Byron (George Byron) Browne (1907-1961). Browne was born in Yonkers, NY and became one of the central figures of the modernist artistic groups that flourished in New York beginning in the 1930’s and continued this into his teaching in the Art Students League and later at NYU. Oil on canvas, signed lower right, signed, titled, and dated on verso “Byron Browne, “The Sail”, 1952, 20 x 26, N.Y.C., Provincetown,” and housed in a painted wooden textured frame. Dimensions: 26” h x 20” w, actual; 33 ¾” h x 27 ¾” w, framed.
