This oil portrait of Lucy Douglas Gillett (Westfield, MA) was done by American impressionist Robert Lewis Reid (1862-1929). Reid was born in Stockbridge, Massachusetts and became well known for his murals, contemplative female subjects, and landscapes. Shortly after he painted this portrait, he was commissioned to to decorate one of the eight entrance pavilion domes in the Liberal Arts Building for the 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago. Oil on board, signed and dated 1890 center right, inscribed on verso “Lucy D. Gillett, by Robt. Reid, p.1890,” along with an attached paper family history record. Housed in a period gold gilt frame. Dimensions: 12” h x 8 ⅞” w, actual; 15” h x 12” w, framed.
