This wonderful marine oil painting of the "George W. Sweeney" sailing vessel was done by American artist William Pierce Stubbs (1842-1909). Pierce was born in Bucksport, Maine and moved to Charlestown, Massachusetts, where he became well known as a ship's portraitist. Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1871 lower left, and housed in a period gilded frame. Dimensions: 24" h x 36" w, actual; 31 ¾" x 43 ¾", framed.
