Born in Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1804 with the name of Nathaniel Rogers Lane, Fitz Henry (Hugh) Lane became one of America's preeminent marine painters. In 1832, Lane apprenticed himself to William S. Pendleton where he learned the technique of lithography and became a gifted printmaker. During his life, he is known to have produced over forty different prints from large town views to music sheet covers. Today his prints are in many museums and are highly coveted by collectors.
