Wonderful watercolor by Irene Hodes Newman of New York City's 8th Avenue Subway and an adjacent newspaper kiosk. Watercolor on paper, signed lower left, Hirschl and Adler Galleries label on reverse. Dimensions: 22.5" x 30.5".

An impressionist painter, known for her watercolors of southern street scenes and people in New Orleans, Irene Hodes Newman (1900-1982) exhibited at the Milch and Grand Central Galleries in New York, the Brooklyn Museum and the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. She served as a juror and treasurer of Audubon Artists and a member of the American Watercolor Society. She died at age 82 in the Florence Nightengale Nursing Home in New York City.
