A nice pair of wooden hand painted golden yellow cane seat fancy chairs, branded “L. Barnes” on the underside, circa 1820. Paint decorated in a musical motif crest , the shaped back splat featuring a torch, ribbon, bows & arrow, with a swag decorated seat rail and foliate painted front stretcher. Lewis Barnes (1776-1856) was a Portsmouth merchant and sea captain. A similar example can be found in the New Hampshire Historical Society collection (see Object ID: 2014.012).The pair of chairs are in good overall condition, with paint losses, surface rubs, minor repairs & restorations, and wear commensurate with age and use. Dimensions: 34.88 in H x 18.5 in W x 18 in D, with a seat height of 18 inches. Ref: 8
