Vintage pair of King Charles cavalier spaniels with older youths sitting on them (Photo 1, 2 and 5). The female clutches a small purse and the male wears a gold fringed coat (Photos 2 and 3). This is an original pair with nice brush painted decoration and strong press molded details (see Photos 3, 4, 5 and 7). The reddish-brown patches on each dog are slightly feathered. All colors are painted over the glaze and include black (eyes, eye brows, dog claws, splashes on bases), chocolate brown (shoes, the couples hair, spots on bases), dark blue (jacket), yellow (bonnets, accents on bases), green (bases) and shiny bright gold (see all Photos). Unlike some 20th century Staffordshire reproductions of mantle spaniels, this pair was not slip cast but instead is hand made using the older method of pressing clay into a mold.
These Figurines were likely produced in the 1990s or slightly earlier and are inexpensive examples of late 20th century King Charles spaniels for the Staffordshire figurine collector. Each Figurine weighs about 3/4 lbs and rests on a recessed base with a broad foot rim running along the outer edge (see Photos 6 and 7).The outline of each base is slightly different as Photo 6 illustrates. The back of these Figurines have limited painted decoration (see Photo 5) and which is more typically with examples from the late 1900s than those from the 1800s.
The two paws on the front of each spaniel are free standing and molded separately while the other two paws are not differentiated from the rest of figurine. Photo 4 illustrates one of the free standing paws on the back of one of the Dogs. The gold luster on these Figurines is very glossy and mirror-like. Each figurine has been artificially aged by being coated with a grayish-black soot to simulate years of use and display. The glaze on these two figurines has moderately fine crazing overall that is accented by the applied staining. The bases have been pierced by a single vent hole to prevent firing defects in the kiln. Brown felt tabs have been added to each to prevent scratching wood surfaces. This pair of spaniels displays well and can be placed in a parlor, on a mantle, along a window sill, or in a hutch or china cabinet along with other Staffordshire figurines.

SIZE & CONDITION: Each figurine stands about 6 1/4 inches tall and measures about 5 inches wide from head to tail. final shipping weight is estimated between 2 and 3 lbs). Although each spaniel is in very good condition with no major defects and no chips, deep scratches, or restoration. The Spaniel with the young man on it has had the head of the man glued back on it (see Photo 9) while the Spaniel with the young woman has had the tail knock off and glued back on (see Photo 8). When these Figurines were acquired, I missed seeing the glued repairs given that the repair work is not very visible except up close under strong light. Of course, if the buyer is not completely satisfied, then she/he may return these Spaniels for a refund (both must be sent back together because they are sold as a single lot, see our complete return policy for all details as noted below).
