Antique octagonal large canister with two wrigglework engraved panels containing religious iconography and Christian symbols (see all nine Photos). One panel depicts a Tree of Life reaching upward beneath the letters ‘IHS’ and the other panel has a Coat of Arms style cartouche with the date of 1815 (see Photos 1, 2 and 5). IHS is a ancient Christian monogram that was developed over 1,000 years ago for use on church related items. It is an abbreviation for Jesus and was taken from an early spelling of his name in ancient Greek more fully depicted as IHΣOYΣ and subsequently reduced over the centuries to IHΣ and ultimately IHS. Additionally, the IHS engraved on this vessel has a cross emerging out of the center bar of the H that adds further religious imagery to that particular panel (see Photo 5 at very top).
Below the IHS inscription is a second line containing two letters: a lower case ‘e’ that may have been originally an upper case ‘C’ and an upper case ‘P’ (see Photo 5). Each letter is followed by three dots placed or positioned to form a small triangle or pyramid. The three dots probably symbolize the omission of one or more words after each letter for paraphrasing a quoted passage or set of ecclesiastical terms. The meaning or significance of this second set of letters, that is the importance of the abbreviation ‘e ... P ...’ (or C ... P ...) is currently unknown. If any viewer knows more about ‘e/C ... P ...’, kindly drop me an email - - thanks, Doc.
Although the wrigglework on this canister contains the date of 1815 (see Photo 4), it is also possible that this vessel was made some years before that date especially if it served other functions before being put into service with the clergy. Wrigglework is a special type of zigzagged engraving that was most popular in the Neoclassical period or from about 1750s to the 1820s although it occurs well before and after those dates. It is found on soft metals such as pewter and silver and often includes initials, names, mottos and dates. Marriage events, anniversary dates, owners initials and various mottos, symbolic images and cultural iconography are also engraved using the same zigzag style.
This canister with its cover in place weighs nearly 2.5 lbs empty and measures about 7 3/8 inches tall to the top of the handle socket with the handle laying on its side (see Photos 1, 2 and 7). Its maximum height is with the handle set upright is 8 5/8 inches. The canister is eight sided or paneled with only two of the panels engraved with wrigglework motifs. It has a maximum base diameter of 5 1/8 inches across (see Photo 9, minimum basal diameter is 4 7/8 inches).
As often is the case with antique pewter, this cannister exhibits a few small dents (see Photo 1, 3 and 9) and several repairs from centuries of use and care. For example, the finial attachment on the cover that serves to secure the handle is likely a replacement piece that has been soldered in place (see Photo 2). On the inside of the cover, the repairer placed a thin sheet of iron to complete the mend (see Photo 8). Other minor repairs are discussed in detail in the Condition section listed farther below.

SIZE & CONDITION: This canister with cover in place weighs nearly 2.5 lbs empty and measures about 7 3/8 inches tall to the top of the handle socket as the handle rests on its side (see Photos 1, 2 and 7).
