Antique sand-cast and lathe finished brass candlestick with round base, ornate bands and knops, and urn-shaped candle cup with fixed rim (see all Photos). The stem, cup and nozzle were cast altogether but in two separate vertical halves and then brazed (soldered) and joined to make the complete stick leaving behind a vertical seam composed of slightly different colored metal (due to the solder). The vertical seam stops at the top of the base (see Photos 2, 3, 4) because the round base is also cast, but instead is produced in a single mold with its underside lathe skimmed to remove the rough surface (see Photos 5 and 6). This candlestick is taller than the average candlestick from the 1700s or 1800s and measures 11 1/2 inches in height. And so it stands more than 2 to 3 inches taller than most typical late 1700s candlesticks (see Photo 7). Only the tall classical candlestick with urn shaped candle-cup shown all by itself in the first seven Photos is for sale here. The other items shown in Photos 8 and 9 are not for sale at this time.
Classical style brass candlesticks with urn-shaped candle cups were popular in the late 1700s. They were produced in America and England between about 1770 and 1810, hence the c1790 mid-date (e.g., see Kaufman 1968: page 239 bottom right for a photo of a nearly identical pair in the Henry Francis Du Pont Museum collection). This candlestick is in good condition with no major dents or cracks. It does have an old repair to its lower stem (see full Condition notes farther below). It weighs about 1 1/2 lbs and sits flat on a round base and does not wobble. The stem is firmly threaded into to the top of the base and was subsequently soldered so that the stem cannot be unscrewed and disassembled (see Photo 7 where lowermost pencil points to soldered junction between base and stem). There is also a repair using solder just above the junction between the stem and base (see Photo 7 where uppermost pencil points to upper repair). The stem is perfectly vertical and stands upright while the repair is professional and solid. The repair work was likely completed more than 150 years ago and used good quality solder that is comparatively hard.
And as the Photos illustrate, this antique brass candlestick has nice molded accents, lathe tooled bands and incised lines (see Photos 2, 3 and 4). In all, there are thirteen recognizable decorative bands, rings, incised lines, and lathe cut ridges and knops. The workmanship is good and subsequent brass candles sticks produced in the early 1800s demonstrate a notable declined in lathe cut accents as larger knops came into fashion along with taller pedestal-like square or rectangular bases (see examples #126 and #128 on page 214 and page 216, respectively, for typical mid 1800s candlesticks in the Donald L. Fennimore, Metalwork in Early America: Copper and its Alloys from the Winterthur Collection published in 1996).
Finally, there are no makers names or factory marks on this candlestick. Consequently, we do not know exactly who made it. It may be either American or English in manufacture and once had a working push up that no longer moves. And as always, this antique brass candlestick also comes with my 100% guarantee or you may return it via my return policy for a refund (see full return policy given farther below for all details).
SIZE: This candlestick stand about 11 1/2 inches tall, has a base that measure about 4 1/2 inches across (diameter) and has a wax catcher rim (fix bobeche) that measures about 2 1/4 inches across. The inside diameter of the candle cup at its rim is about 1 inch across. This is a wonderful antique sand cast and lathe turned vertically seamed brass candlestick that is over 210 years old. It a nice large size for displaying on a shelf, table, counter or mantle and will certainly draw attention and interest.
CONDITION: This tall antique candlestick is in good condition with no current fractures or cracks and just two very old soldered repairs (see Photo 7) with the upper one correcting a former fracture or break. The vertical seam on the short section of the stem below the upper soldered band is rotated about 30 degrees counter clockwise to the seam above the band indicating that the stem was once broken and severed before it was repaired. The repair is professional and the stem stands perfectly upright and straight today as it was when it was first produced (see all Photos). The candle stick has no other repairs and no major dents or scratches. It sits perfectly flat and does not wobble. There is old wax inside the candle cup and on the rim. The button tab on the bottom of the iron push up shaft is missing and the push up no longer moves freely (one might be able to clean it to get it working again, but no guarantee are offerd ). The brass displays some oxidation from age but no pitting or corrosion. It has not been polished in many decades. Of course and as always, if the buyer is not 100% satisfied, then she/he may return this antique brass candlestick for a refund (see our refund policy noted below for all details).
