Antique Doulton Lambeth small stoneware vase or miniature jar decorated with tiny impressed stars, incised lines, hand pared grounds and applied clay sprig decoration using five different colors (see all Photos). It has the Doulton Lambeth SILICON factory mark along with its year of manufacture, 1883, all impressed on the underside of the base. This particular impressed Doulton mark was used from about 1881 until 1890 (after 1890, England was added to the mark). There are three other smaller impressed marks that are probably workers marks (see Photo 7 for close up of all marks).
Although this vase is just 3 inches tall, it is attractive to look at since it has both carefully incised and impressed decoration as well as very tiny applied clay decoration in relief (see Photos 1 & 5). A diaper of stars fills in the ground between the alternating sets of cartouches made up of a large rosette set next to a small flower in bloom with two leaves. Hand workmanship is evident even within the small undecorated oval space immediately around each small flower in bloom. Here, the worker finely scored the exterior surface of the vase to create texture that complements the adjacent impressed star designs (see Photo 1). The interior of the vase is glazed and so it call be used as a flower vase even today.
In all, it is estimated that there are over 450 individually applied small pieces of clay decoration. Some of the tiniest pieces of colored clay are set inside small incised stars probably using a special tool that accomplished both in a single application. Still, this small vase probably consumed nearly as many hours to decorate as a standard size Doulton sprigged Silicon stoneware vase. In all, seven colors of clay were used to produce this vase: six different colors for the applied clay motifs (i.e., pure white, creamy-white, light blue, blue, dark brown, and green limited solely to the leaves), and then a milk chocolate brown clay for the entire body of the vase (see all Photos). The vase is in good condition with no major damage and over 98% of the applied decoration is intact as originally added (see complete Condition statement farther below).
The small size of this ovoid shaped vase makes it easy to display compared to larger Doulton pieces. It can be placed on a kitchen window sill, counter, on a shelf, table, bureau or in a hutch or China cabinet. It is guaranteed to capture interest and attention in most any setting and would also look at home among a group of Fabergé-type eggs or porcelain figurines. And as always, this Doulton small vase also comes with a full satisfaction guarantee or you may return it post marked by 14 days for a refund (see my return policy below for full details). Finally, every buyer also has the option to design a customized lay-away plan for purchasing this item by simply requesting the terms you wish to use and then let me take care of setting it up as requested (payment installments may be modified at any time should the unexpected ever arise, just let me know by email).
SIZE & CONDITION: This small vase stands about 3 inches tall, has a maximum diameter of 2 1/2 inches across and an outer rim diameter of about 1 1/2 inches across. It has thick walls and so can be used as a vase for short stemmed flowers. Also, it is in very good condition with no rim chips, hairlines, stains, repairs or restoration (see all Photos). Of the more than 450 pieces of applied color clay, there are just a half dozen that have broken off or were not complete at the original time of firing. The two largest pieces of detached or missing clay sprigs are shown in Photos 8 and 9. A pencil points to a piece of the applied flower that is missing (each of the three flowers has a small piece missing), and a pen points to one of the creamy white petals that has a piece missing (see Photo 8). But because 98% of the many intricate details are still intact and as originally produced some 132 years ago, these few exception are not readily apparent. Of course, if the buyer is not completely satisfied, then she/he may return this antique Doulton Lambeth vase for a refund (see our complete return policy noted below).
