Chinese watercolor painting on silk showing butterfly and flowers from the early to mid 1900s (or older; see all Photos). The gilded bamboo frame is vintage and dates from the late 1900s or earlier. All of the leaves, flowers and other images are outlined in purplish-brown after which the artist used various brushes and other implements to fill them in and complete the scene. A few of the small solid designs, such as the small triangular orange spots along the petals of the orange flower (see Photo 5) appear to be added or stamped using a shaped bone implement rather than a pliable brush tip. Other fine lines in black or grayish-black may have been drawn using a pen rather than a brush (see all Photos). At least, these are my current observations and if any viewer knows more about older Asian silk water colors, then kindly drop me and email - - thanks, Doc.
The water colors used in this silk painting include gauche, opaque colors for black, red, orange and white, as well as some translucent washes. It appears that the silk is laid over a thin wood board that is used as a backing although the frame has not been taken apart to verify this observation (determined by touch). The bamboo frame is probably from the mid to late 1900s, or about 35 to 65 years old at most. Since the silk water color is sealed and professionally frames, it was decided not to take the frame apart to investigate the painting in greater detail.
Finally, this is a hand signed silk water color with the artist mark in black ink in the upper left corner and a Chinese seal or chop mark stamped in red ink below (see Photo 3 for close up). There is an oriental style inner cloth border around the painting in place of a true matte. The cloth border is constructed of four strips of silk with a woven floral pattern visible best under strong raking light (Photo 7 attempts to capture the floral pattern). This is a wonderful older Oriental water color on silk from more than 80 years that was framed in the mid to late 1900s. I have a second example with a yellow flower that has a different signature and different chop mark that will be listed separately in the near future. Both are shown in the last photo for comparison only (only the orange flower example is for sale here). Both have the same frames and were acquired from the same estate sale. The price listed here is for just this silk painting with the orange flower that is shown all by itself in the first eight photos. And as always, it comes with my Docs Antiques 100% satisfaction guarantee or you may return it using my return policy for a refund (see full Return Policy details farther below).
