Antique large tile with fruit and leaves in high relief and covered with a rich treacle brown glaze that accents details (see all photos). The molasses brown glaze appears dark in crevices while is translucent on raised areas. The tile is professionally set in a gilded frame that is about 1 1/2 inches deep that complements the high relief details of the ripened fruit (see Photos 1, 2 and 9). The fruit may be apples or peaches and protrudes about 1/2 inches above the flat background surface or face of the tile. The face of the tile is covered by the dark translucent brown glaze that upon close inspection reveals a surface containing fine raised diagonal lines or ridges in the flat background areas that become entirely engulfed by the thick glaze (see close-up photos) .
This tile measures about 6 by 6 inches square. It was produced by the ‘UNITED STATES ENCAUSTIC TILE WORKS, INDIANAPOLIS, IND.’ and this entire mark is stamped into the back of the tile using five lines (see Photo of back of tile). The tile is in excellent condition with no chipped corners or edges and no major scratches. The United States Encaustic Tile Works started production in 1877 in Indianapolis under the name United States Encaustic Tile Company. It was founded by William Harrison, a cousin of President Benjamin Harrison and the early factory was destroyed by a fire and rebuilt by 1879 (see Lois Lehner’s reference book titled ‘Lehner’s Encyclopedia of U.S. Marks on Pottery, Porcelain & Clay,’ published in 1988 by Collector Books, page 480). The tile company went into receivership in 1886 when the bank owned by Mr. Harrison failed. The company was reorganzied and came out of the receivership on May 10, 1886 under the name ‘United States Encaustic Tile Works.’ It produced unglazed floor tiles as well as glazed wall and fireplace tiles. It also produced tiles in relief and the tile offered here is an example of extremely high relief with the cluster of three fruit raised about 1/2 inch above the face of the tile.

SHIPPING: All US mainland buyers pay $9.40 for well packed USPS Priority mail and this is an estimated savings of $1 to $4 since insurance and tracking are also INCLUDED in this amount. The insured postage you pay is less than our actual costs and there are never any handling or packing fees. All international buyers will also pay less than the actual shipping costs for all verifiable locations outside the Continental US mainland since we strive to help reduce insured postage costs for everyone no matter where they live. Additionally, we only use the USPS for International shipping to reduce broker fees and certain Custom’s charges when an item is over 100 years old and your Country allows a waiver. We ask the International customer to send us their confirmed address for an email quote covering several International shipping options to your location. Please note that International import duties, taxes and other charges are not included in the item price or shipping costs and these additional charges are the Buyer's responsibility. We do offer a petition for VAT relief on the behalf of the buyer which may help reduce certain import taxes when your country allows such petitions for items over 100 years old. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to purchasing this item -- thanks.
RETURN POLICY: Satisfaction and peace of mind are guaranteed for all Docs Antiques Ruby Lane listings -- please refer directly to our Service Pledge and our Return Policy for full details. And this means that if the buyer is unhappy with their purchase, then she/he may return it by sending the item back undamaged and post marked within fourteen days of original receipt for a refund (certain shipping costs are non-refundable, please insure the item and add tracking). Items damaged by shipping in the US are covered by insurance and while this rarely happens because we double pack, we will gladly help you file your insurance claim should it ever be necessary. Of course, never send an item back that has been damaged by shipping since that will void the original insurance. Instead, contact us for help and we will gladly assist.
PAYMENT OPTIONS: Checks on US Banks (no temporary checks, all checks must have 9 digit routing code; item ships after check fully clears), USPS money orders, PayPal, or contact us with your verified address for more options. If you wish to use a credit card by way of PayPal, that option becomes available after you submit a Ruby Lane purchase order. Once submitted, a PayPal icon will appear at the bottom of this listing and then you may proceed from there if you wish to pay via PayPal. Or see our Terms of Sale for additional information.
