NOTE ON CINCO de MAYO: May 5 is celebrated in the United States for various reasons and the tradition started in California in 1863 (See Wikipedia entry for Cinco de Mayo). Some historians believe that if the Mexican army did not defeat the French army at the battle of Puebla, in Puebla Mexico on May 5, 1862 and set the French invasion of Mexico by Napoleon III back many months, the outcome of the American Civil War could have been very different. These historians point to the fact that Napoleon III was intent on establishing a strong foot hold in Mexico so that he could set up Maximilian I as ruler of Mexico and then send aid northward to the Confederacy and the South in order to sway the war and permanently split the United States. The set back caused by the French defeat at Pueblo added just enough delay to keep the French from greatly influencing the outcome American Civil War.
The celebration of May 5th in the United States did not really become common place until the 1980s after certain commercial industries decided to promote the date as a way to market their products in a festive atmosphere. The celebration had been growing in observance since the 1940s although it did not hit mainstream America until about 30 years later. Today, the celebration of Cinco de Mayo provides an opportunity to add a Mexican and Hispanic day of festivities in America that may be added to the cultural melting pot of the US that observes St Patrick's day, Chinese New Years, and the spirit of German-American Oktoberfests. And when one recognizes the historical significance of the defeat of the French in 1862, the reason for celebration is even more important to ever American.
