Antique Doulton Burslem for J.J. Royle Self Pouring Teapot.
We are very excited to offer this Self Pouring Teapot by Doulton Burslem. It's 2-tone color of tan and light brown and has a floral design on all sides. The teapot stands approx. 8 1/4" high and is in very nice condition.
The bottom of the pot is marked "Royles Patent Self Pouring No. 6327 1886 Manufactured by Doulton's Burslem for J.J. Royle Manchester".
The Self Pour Teapots were originally produced as a promotional item for customers. They became so popular that a production of several thousand were commissioned from Doulton and Co.
The teapot works by a pumping mechanism and was designed for the large Victorian family who required large teapots. The lid is raised and then pressed with the finger covering the small hole in the top of the lid, generating pressure within the teapot. Pushing down the lid forced tea though a grating in the bottom of the pot and up through the spout.
The teapots were supplied to Queen Victoria in 1887 as well as the Princess of Whales, Alexandria of Denmark and to the Grand Duke Serge of Russia.
