This is a 19th century U.S. Officer's Sword. The blade is marked E.A. Armstrong Chicago, IL. It has a clam shell guard with an eagle on one side and a shield on the other. The blade has an etched design and it says "US" on one side and the other side has the "American Eagle". The only flaw I see with this sword is that it has lacquer/varnish spots. I did a little research and it says to use acetone to remove the varnish from the blade. I don't know enough about swords and I'm not comfortable doing anything to it. I'm sure a collector will know exactly how to care for it.
The total length is 36" and the blade is 30". This is a wonderful piece of Military History!
The sword is complete with its original plated metal scabbard with ornate, embossed brass fittings, retaining the original gilding.
DIMENSIONS: overall length 38", sword length 36 1/4", blade length 30", scabbard length 31 1/2"
CONDITION: excellent original condition structurally - original gilding intact - the only "issue" is that the pommel "cap" is missing (butt end of the handle) - otherwise complete and in great condition, showing typical / expected wear consistent with its age.
