Dating to ca. 1760-1770, this early Georgian garnet brooch is a fabulous and highly wearable survival!
This superb example of 18th-century jewelry features 14 rose-cut pyrope garnets ranging in size from 10 points for the smallest, to 1 1/2 carats for the pear-shaped garnet drop! Like most Rococo jewels, these garnets are claw-and-collet set in closed-back mounts of sterling grade silver (unmarked but tested). It does not appear that the garnets are foiled at the back, as the color of the stones are deepest wine-red, and have great clarity. All of the garnets are intact and original to the piece.
The style of the brooch is naturalistic, and its size indicates that it may have once been part of a larger stomacher jewel. Measuring 1 3/8" x 1 3/8" with the pendant drop, this element was converted to a brooch ca. 1820, by which time stomacher jewels had long fallen out of fashion. The brooch now has a "T and C" clasp on the reverse, which is in excellent working order. The silver setting of the brooch retains all of its wonderful mid 18th-century craftsmanship, with pierced and carved silverwork, and convex settings to the backs of the stones.
Simply a lovely example of fine Georgian jewelry, this jewel's early conversion to a brooch has helped preserve it for wear well into the 21st century! The design is so elegant, and the garnets sparkle against anything you wear it with! The two square-shaped tabs at the left and right of the upper portion of the brooch indicate that there may have been additional drops at these terminals, but it looks perfectly fine worn "as is." Alternatively, you could add small pearls to add even more dimension and beauty to this already impressive jewel!
If you collect the finest in garnet or Georgian jewelry, this brooch will take you from the office to the theatre in grand style! This is one historic brooch which has survived in exceptional condition, without losses or damage - do not miss it! USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
