Dating to ca. 1830-1835, this extra-long pair of silver gilt day/night earrings are a late-Georgian delight!
These earrings would have been at the height of fashion in the early 1830s, when earrings would reach the greatest length they would see in the 19th-century! Moreover, they are day/night earrings, so they are doubly desirable and versatile!
Measuring a grand 3 1/8" long, these jewels boast floral-motif tops with ribbed edging and beadwork. The tops measure 7/8" long with their original "back to front" wires. The wires alone test to 15k gold. The drops are fashioned from textured silver gilt, and are simply elegant, with bead terminals. These earrings are finished with the matte gilding that was at its height of popularity in the 1820s and 1830s.
In splendid, all-original condition, these 180-year-old jewels have survived nearly two centuries with no damage or repairs! 95% of the gilding is intact (there are two very small rub spots on the back of one of the drops, completely unnoticeable when worn). These earrings are very well-constructed, and have suffered no scratches or dents. I have seen similar earrings crafted in pinchbeck, but silver gilt jewelry was finer and more labor-intensive to produce. Very few examples of Georgian earrings survive in this material.
Together, the earrings weigh 8.7 grams. They are very comfortable on the ear, and one can wear the tops for daytime, and add the dramatic drops for evening wear! These jewels are a classic; the matte gold finish makes them suitable for wear with either antique or modern gold jewelry, and they are just as wearable today as when they graced the ears of a fashionable belle of the late-Georgian period. The torpedo drops really dance!
