SPRING SALE! The FINEST Antique Jewelry on Ruby Lane for 21 Years! Layaways Available! I Ship Overseas!
Dating to c.200 AD for the Roman carnelian intaglio and c.1870 for the 18k gold setting, this jewel packs over 1800 years of history into one splendidly-wearable ring!
This ring is wrought from 18k gold, and is completely wrought by hand (gold unmarked but tested). The focus here is on the ancient intaglio; this deep orange-red carnelian stone is engraved with the bust of a helmeted solider facing left. The intaglio measures 11 mm x 8.6 mm x 3.4 mm thick, and is in wonderfully-preserved condition, with no scratches or chips. The front of the stone retains a high polish.
This intaglio dates to c.200 AD, and the carving is typical of small Roman intaglios of the third century AD. The soldier's profile is deliniated by just a few engraved strokes, but one can see that he is depicted with quite a large nose, and a feathery crest tops his helmet, reaching down to his neck. It is likely that the original owner acquired the intaglio on a Grand Tour of Italy, and had it custom-mounted into the ring you see here. The ring weighs in at 4.77 grams; very substantial for it's size.
The ring setting is oh-so-elegant; the intaglio is securely mounted with four wide double-claws, and the shoulders are decorated with arrows and applied bead work. The polished double-shank is another fine detail. At some point in it's 150-year-old history, this ring was sized up from a size 7 to a size 8 1/4, but otherwise, this ring is untouched! The high-karat gold has not been cleaned, and has developed the wonderful "bloom" of age that collectors cherish!
Suitable for wear by a lady or as a dashing pinky ring for a gentleman, this is a timeless jewel that is certain to thrill both the lover of Roman history and Victorian lapidary work! If you collect either, this jewel belongs on your hand and in your collection! It would also make a wonderful gift, and will be shipped in a new gift box. As with all of my items pre-dating 1700, this ring will be sold with a COA and valuation for your insurance purposes at no extra charge. Do not miss this classical beauty; up to 90-day layaway is available with 1/3 down, and USPS domestic shipping is FREE!
