Dating to c.1800-1810, this remarkable, high-karat gold, enamel, and garnet Maltese cross pendant is a superbly-wearable jewel for the 21st-century lady!

Measuring a perfectly-proportioned 1 1/8" x 1 1/8" x 4 mm thick, this beautiful pendant boasts 13 flat-cut garnets, all set in individual, high-karat gold collets, and and all set against a one-of-a-kind enamel ground! The Maltese cross was at the height of fashion during this decade, and this essentially English form has become a classic which has transcended the whims of fashion. Moreover, In my 25+ years as a collector, dealer and scholar of Georgian-era jewelry, I have never seen another enameled example!

The center garnet measures 5 mm x 5.2 mm and weighs approx. 85 points. The twelve surrounding garnets measure 3 mm x 3.9 mm and weigh approx. 1/4 carat each. That adds up to 3.85 carats of perfectly-matched garnets! Each garnet is set in foil-backed, rubbed-over settings of 15k gold (unmarked but tested)! But it is the enamel which sets this jewel apart from the rest; the front of the cross boasts an opaque white ground, with delicate black highlights, and the enamel is 100% intact after over 215 years! It appears that the garnets are set against red enamel hearts - another unique element I have never seen before! SO EXCITING!

This jewel is not without some signs of acceptable wear; two of the smaller garnets are cracked, and it appears from looking at the back of the cross that the bottom arm has been expertly repaired by laser. I believe that this jewel began its long history as a brooch, as the bail displays an extra gold tab at the back. None of this is visible when the pendant is worn, but I have taken it into consideration when setting my price. Otherwise, this enameled rarity is in excellent shape, and looks absolutely beautiful worn on a gold chain. These garnets really sparkle against the white and black enamel, and this is a substantial jewel for its size, weighing in at 8.78 grams.

Simply a stunner of a Georgian Maltese cross pendant, this beauty can be dressed up or down, and worn with anything from blue jeans to a cocktail dress! I truly believe that this is a one-of-a-kind jewel, and is the sort that makes an instant family heirloom. If you collect the rarest in Regency-era jewelry, this beauty belongs around your neck and in your collection! It would also make a stellar gift fro any lady fond of Georgian devotional jewelry, and will be shipped in a gift box. Do not miss this unique jewel; up to 60-day layaway is available, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
