Dating to c.1920-1930, this near-antique ring is bursting with stunning, natural rubies as well as diamond accents in a beautiful 14k white gold mounting! As most of my clients know, I rarely deal in 20th century jewelry, but when I spied this blazing beauty at the Las Vegas Jewelry show, I knew I had to have it in my shop for the consideration of my collectors and dealers alike!
Measuring 7/8" across the bezel and 9 mm wide, this Jazz Age jewel boasts five of the finest untreated rubies that this dealer and collector of 25+ years has seen in a ring of this date! These rubies all are old-cuts, indicating that they may well pre-date the setting; just as today, we re-mount our precious gemstones into new pieces as trends in fashion come and go, so did the collectors of past generations. However, this five-stone ring design is now a classic, having stood the test of over 100 years, and will never go out of style!
The setting of this lovely jewel is wrought from 14k white gold (slightly worn 14k mark; tested). But oh, the rubies! These are natural, untreated gemstones, and pre-date high heat treatment or enhancement by over 50 years. These stones boast magnificent natural color, with loads of silk visible under 10x magnification, and the undertone of blue which is the "fingerprint" of the finest of these gems. They also have good clarity, and are guaranteed untreated!
The two smallest rubies measure approx. 4 mm x 3.5 mm and weigh a calculated 40 points each. The second-largest rubies measure 5.1 mm x 4 mm and 4.9 mm x 4 mm and weigh 80 points and 75 points respectively. The center stone measures 5.9 mm x 5 mm and weighs 1.01 carats. That adds up to 3.41 carats of perfectly-matched antique rubies! (The stones were measured in the mounting, so the total carat weight is likely closer to 3.6 carats, but I prefer to err on the side of caution.)
All of these stones are bead- and collet-set in this elegant white gold setting, with ten tiny, single-cut diamond "sparks" set above and below the bezel for even more sparkle! This is a substantial ring, and is in as fine a condition as the most discerning collector could hope for; it has never suffered resizing or repairs, and all of the stones are intact. Again, I strongly believe that the rubies pre-date the ring by several decades, as they are cut and faceted by hand (not machine), and display the weighty "bellies" beneath the girdles which I associate with Victorian-era rubies. Each ruby looks a tiny bit different than it's neighbor, which is a sign of hand-workmanship.
Simply a fabulously-wearable example of early 20th century lapidary work, this ring lights up the hand with red hot fire, and loos fabulous worn alone, or with other "stacking" rings for a real statement! This ring will be an "official" antique within a decade, and is certain to prove a good investment. It has made it into the 21st century in near-mint condition, and looks just as beautiful on the hand today as when it as first worn by a lady of wealth and fashion over 90 years ago. It is a 6 3/4, but it could easily be re-sized by a good bench jeweler for little cost. This ring weighs in at 5.01 grams. JUST FABULOUS!
If you collect the ULTIMATE in estate jewelry, this fabulous ring belongs on your hand and in your collection! It would also make a stellar gift for any lady fond of fine rubies, and will be shipped in a gift box. I have seen ruby rings of this weight and quality sell for upwards of $4000, but not in my shop; when I get a good deal, so do you!
