Dating to c.1780-1790, this magnificent Spanish ruby and high-karat cross pendant is a magnificently-wearable devotional jewel as well as a fine investment opportunity for the discerning collector!
Measuring a perfectly-proportioned 1 7/8" x 1 1/4", this splendid ruby-encrusted cross has made it though the past 230+ years in as fine a condition as one could possibly hope for; it appears as if it were rarely worn! Wrought in 18k yellow gold, this elegant jewel boasts 14 natural blood-red rubies, each mounted in the rubbed-over, closed-backed collets one expects to see in jewelry of the late 18th century (gold unmarked but tested).
In fact, this cross is a triumph of the 18th-century Spanish lapidary's art; rather than using thin, cut-down settings and sheet gold, these precious gemstones are completely bezeled in protective gold collets mounted in a very substantial, three-dimensional, open work setting! Moreover, the oh-so-Rococo design of the gold work has become a classic which will never go out of style! This lovely cross is so fabulous that it was valued at $4,780.00 by my graduate gemologist!
And oh, my goodness; just LOOK at those rubies! Perfectly matched for color, they vary in size from 10 points for the smallest six gems (top of bail, bottom and rays of the cross) to 20-25 points for the larger stones. That adds up to a calculated 4.34 carats of rich, red, untreated antique rubies! Best of all, every ruby is in fabulous condition, without cracks, chips, or signs of facet wear; I attribute the extra work and skill on the part of the jeweler for this grand state of preservation!
But wait - it gets better! The back of this outstanding cross is just as beautiful as the front! It is profusely hand-engraved with a full-blown rose (representing the blood of Christ, as do the rubies), as well as elegant, feathery leaves from top to bottom! Even the bail of this jewel is intact, and displays engraved sprigs; one rarely sees this level of detail work! Moreover, the gold work is not so much cast as sculpted; it is very three-dimensional. This is also a substantial jewel, weighing in at 8.74 grams. JUST SPECTACULAR!
Simply one of the finest Georgian-era crosses that I have had the pleasure to offer in some time, this regal pendant is also a highly-wearable treasure! It can be worn with anything from blue jeans to a cocktail dress, and it is nothing short of breathtaking worn on a gold chain! Best of all, this ruby beauty is just as fresh today as when it was first worn by a Spanish lady of wealth and fashion during the 1790s! The design is a classic; this heirloom-worthy jewel has transcended the whims of fashion, and will always be in high style!
If you cherish the best in fine historic devotional jewelry, this cross belongs around your neck and in your collection! It would also make a thrilling gift for any lady with a July birthday (as ruby is her gemstone), and will be shipped in a gift box. The GG valuation for $4,780.00 will be included for your insurance purposes at no extra charge. Better yet, treat yourself to this magnificent treasure! Either way, do not miss it; I do not expect to find another of this quality and exceptional condition, up to 120-day layaway is available, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
