Dating to c.1780-1790 for the paste buttons and 1830 for the gold findings, this pair of festive red and white paste earrings are proof that some marriages were made in Heaven!
Measuring 1 1/8" long from the tops of their 9k ear wires x 3/4" in diameter, this pair of earrings began their long lives as a pair of buttons, but were converted to the earrings you see here c.1830. Paste jewelry was more difficult to set than gemstone jewelry, and pastes jewels such as this fell out of fashion for men c.1800. However, these buttons were considered too precious to discard, so they were co-opted by the original owner's daughters or granddaughters, and converted to lady's jewelry, just as the lovely earrings you see here!
These stunners may be 215+ years old, but they translate beautifully into bold "statement" jewelry for the modern lady. These clusters boast a large central "ruby" pastes weighing approx. 4 "carats" each. Surrounding these stones are a halo of white, cushion-cut pastes, and the border of the jewels are cunningly decorated with small ruby pastes for a look that is second-to-none!
All of the pastes are bead- and collet-set into mountings of sterling-grade silver, backed with the dome of 9k rose gold likely added when the buttons were converted in the early Victorian era. All of the stones are original, and all are intact, without damage or visible wear to the gems or settings. Today, these colorful earrings can be worn with anything from a business suit to that little black dress, and WHAT a history! Together, the pair weighs 6.25 grams.
If you collect the best in antique Georgian paste jewelry, these earrings will make a splendid addition to your collection! They would also make a stellar gift for any lady who loves her jewelry to be unique as well as historic, and will be shipped in a gift box.
