Webster's Dictionary defines a "masterpiece" as "a work done with extraordinary skill or artistic achievement." I have been fortunate enough lately to acquire several jewels which meet this criteria, and I am proud to present the "Masterpiece collection" for the consideration of my Ruby Lane clientele!
Dating to c.1790-1810, these Spanish Muzo mine emerald, diamond, and high-karat gold poissard earrings represent a dream come true for the most discerning collector of Georgian-era jewelry! I discovered these important earrings during my last buying trip to the UK, and their immaculate condition, rare and sizable Muzo mine emeralds, and incredible hand-craftsmanship all make them worthy of Masterpiece status!
Measuring a dramatic 1 3/4" long x 10 mm at their widest points, these earrings truly have all of the "bells and whistles!" During the Napoleonic Wars, gold was highly scarce, and English and Continental jewelers had to find a method of producing jewelry which used a minimum of gold to maximum effect. Wrought in 18k yellow gold, these earrings represent the epitome of this production, and the 18k gold frames and filigree are nothing short of superb! Best of all, they are just as wearable today as when they first graced the ears of a lady of wealth and fashion over 210 years ago!
While gold was in short supply from 1795-1820, precious stones were not, and these gorgeous earrings are set with two of the finest Colombian Muzo mine emeralds I have seen in antique jewelry of any date! The Colombian Muzo mines, active from 1500-1870, produced the finest emeralds the world has ever seen; these stones are the perfect shade of deep, vibrant green, with the natural "jardin" and undertone of blue which characterizes these finest of these incredibly rare gemstones! The use of these top-quality emeralds indicate a Spanish origin; while this style of earring is normally associated with France, poissards were highly popular throughout Europe at the turn of the 19th century.
And oh, these EMERALDS! Each earring is set with a round Muzo-mine emerald, one measuring 7.1 x 6.8 x 3.9 mm and weighing a calculated 1.03 carats, the other measuring 7.01 x 7.3 x 4.1 mm, and weighs a calculated 1.09 carats! These emeralds are set in pushed-up, rubbed-over, closed-backed collets of 18k gold (later assay mark of "18", maker's mark "A3" in a cartouche). These stunning emeralds are perfectly matched for color, and WHAT color! The foils give them even more fire and sparkle! Set above and below the emeralds are six rose-cut diamond "sparks" of approx. 2 points each. The diamonds are individually set in closed-backed collets of sterling silver. That adds up to 2.36 carats of dazzling, natural antique gemstones!
The bodies of the earrings are wrought in buttery 18k gold with a 22k gold wash, and the combination of the high-karat gold, emeralds and diamonds are second-to-none! These earrings display the "S" brace typical of poissard earrings, which gives them extra flexibility and strength. The ear wires are of the "back-to-front" design, and are hinged to slip into the ear easily. SO FABULOUS!
Best of all, these earrings are in 100% all-original, museum-quality condition, with NO repairs, damage, losses or replacements! Given that these jewels are now into their third century, this is nothing short of spectacular! These earrings have been treated with kid gloves for 10 generations, and are oh-so-wearable; they dress up any outfit in an instant! Together, the earrings weigh a substantial 7.12 grams.
If you love the NE PLUS ULTRA in Georgian-era jewelry, these earrings will become a prized addition to your collection! They would also make the ultimate gift for any lady fond of the best emeralds ever discovered, and will be shipped in a gift box. Do not miss these pristine, investment-worthy jewels; up to 120-day layaway is available, and USPS registered mail shipping is FREE!
