Dating to c.1840-1850, this beautiful pendant epitomizes everything that is so charming about Romantic-era jewelry!
Measuring a perfectly-proportioned 1 5/8" x 1 1/8", this ultra-sweet pendant began it's long life as a brooch, but a previous owner had this jewel converted to a pendant by adding a 15k gold bail c.1920, and this has given it a whole new lease on life! This jewel is truly a reminder that Spring is on it's way; it features a naturalistic forget-me-not set with five turquoise cabochons, a "bud" represented by a sparkling pink topaz, and curling leaves and vines against a scallop-edged plaque of luminous white chalcedony!
I have seen many of these chalcedony-set brooches in my 25+ years as a dealer, collector and scholar of antique jewelry, but this is head-and-shoulders above the typical Victorian example. The skill with which the three-dimensional 15k gold leaves and vines are wrought is nothing short of amazing; the 1840s was a decade of naturalism, and this little bouquet is incredibly dimensional! Pair that with the bright blue of the turquoise and the vibrant little pink topaz, and you have a true treasure!
Best of all, this pendant has made it through the past 170+ years in as fine a condition as the most discerning collector could hope for; apart from the conversion to a pendant, this piece is just as pretty today as when it graced the gown of a lady of wealth and fashion in the 1840s. In my opinion, it is SO much prettier as a pendant; the beveled, scalloped silhouette of the chalcedony looks luminous on the neck! SO DELIGHTFUL!
Weighing in at 8.59 grams, this pendant is oh-so-wearable, and is certain to please anyone who collects the finest in early Victorian jewelry. It would also make a splendid gift for that special lady fond of historic jewelry, and will be shipped in a gift box. Do not miss this exceptional piece; up to 30-day layaway is available, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
