IMPORTANT Tudor Silver Gilt/Enamel Amatory Posy Wedding Ring, "I Am Yovres/Be Myne," c.1585!
Dating to 1575-1600, I am thrilled to present this incredibly-rare unisex solid silver gilt Tudor posy ring for the consideration of my Ruby Lane clientele!
Measuring 6.9 mm wide, this superb and very sturdy silver gilt posy ring is about as rare as they come! This jewel would have been commissioned as an engagement or wedding ring for a well-to-do Tudor lady. The inscription, "I AM YOVRS/BE MYNE" is listed in the Joan Evans catalogue, "English Posies and Posy Rings" as a popular posy for betrothals! Wrought from sterling-grade silver fired with high-karat gold, this historically important love jewel represents a fabulous and wearable investment opportunity for the advanced collector (silver unmarked but tested)!
This magical, 425+ year old jewel was acquired during my buying trip to the UK last October, and is very typical of the wedding bands crafted during the last quarter of the 16th century. It is a solid band, deeply hand-inscribed in Roman serif capitals, which was the chosen font for posy rings from 1510-1620. The motto, "I AM YOVRES/BE MYNE" is spelled in accordance to as-yet-to-be-standardized 16th-century English, and the inscription retains much of it's original black enamel, which is easily visible under 10x magnification! It is nothing short of a miracle that this jewel escaped the melting pot over the centuries; one can only imagine the stories it could tell!
Best of all, this rare Tudor-era jewel has made it into the 21st-century in 100% original and intact condition! It shows no sign of having been excavated; it is completely "in the round," without cracks, dents, repairs, or damages. Originally, this ring would have looked exactly like high-karat gold, but, as one would expect in a ring of this antiquity, careful wear and centuries of handling have worn away most of the the gilding to the outside of the ring. The top and bottom of the outside of the band retains traces of the original gilding. However, the inside of the band still retains a rich golden patina! Needless to say, the silver feels like silk on the hand! SIMPLY OUTSTANDING!
Suitable for wear today by a modern lady or gentleman, this ring is a size 7 1/2, and should NOT be re-sized, for to do so would seriously damage the all-original integrity of this historically-important ring. It weighs in at a hefty 5.58 grams, and is superbly wearable, although it ought to be treated with the care that a ring of this great age and history deserves. (It also looks splendid worn on a black ribbon around the neck, in true Tudor style!) Had this ring been two sizes smaller, I would be keeping it for my personal collection, but alas, I have tiny fingers, so let my loss be your gain!
If you collect the ULTIMATE in pre-Georgian jewelry, this investment-worthy ring from the age of Queen Elizabeth is certain to become a treasured addition to your collection! It would also make a thrilling gift for any lady or gentleman fond of Tudor history or posy rings, and will be shipped in a gift box. As with all of my jewelry pre-dating 1700, this ring will be sold with a COA and valuation for your insurance purposes. Do not miss this amazing rarity; up to 120-day layaway is available, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
