Dating to c.1835-1845, this beautiful transitional pair of William IV/early Victorian earrings are a fabulously-wearable pair of top-quality jewels!
Measuring 2 1/4" long from the tops of the ear wires x 1/2" at their widest points, these gorgeous Sicilian coral earrings have all of the "bells and whistles!" The 14k rose-gold ear wires are of the kidney-shaped variety with an integral safety hook, and display elegant, hand-engraved leaves. Descending below are two superb drops measuring 1 1/4" long, each set with a large coral "briolette," capped and framed with a ribbon of 18k yellow gold (all gold unmarked but tested)!
I suspect that the ear wires are very early replacements, as one does not see kidney-hook wires until the late 1850s. However, the choice was a good one, as they give the luscious coral and 18k yellow gold drops even more drama and dimension! The coral drops are nothing short of sensational, and boast the deep, natural salmon red color which coral collectors crave! The subtle faceting of the coral drops is a holdover from the late Georgian era, and both of the coral drops are 100% intact, and perfectly matched for color. The coral drops are capped and braced in gold, with an elegant ribbon frame. SO LOVELY!
Simply a wonderful example of Romantic-era jewelry, these earrings look smashing on the ear, and are just as fresh as when they were first worn by a lady of wealth and fashion over 175 years ago! These jewels are free from damage and repairs; the only sign of conservation are to the Victorian ear wires. Needless to say, the combination of high-karat rose- and yellow-gold compliment the rich red coral beautifully! These earrings have transcended the whims of fashion, and look splendid worn with anything from blue jeans to a business suit!
Weighing in at 6.45 grams, these earrings represent a rare opportunity for the collector of antique coral jewelry, and are truly investment-worthy.
