Dating to c.1795-1805, this high-karat gold locket holds a charming, colorful, hand-painted enamel on copper of a Neoclassical lady of fashion, and is oh-so-wearable by a 21st-century lady!
Measuring 1 5/8" x 1 1/8" x 1/4" thick, this 100% all-original jewel has made it through the past 220+ years in as fine a condition as the most discerning collector could hope for! Our subject is a pretty young lady dressed at the height of fashion for c.1795. Our lass wears a white, Empire-waist muslin gown trimmed with light blue silk and sheer tulle at the neckline. Billowing over her shoulders is a purple cloak lined with red and gold silk.
Our lady's abundant chestnut-brown hair is dressed in curls around her face, and is held by a pink, white and black tiara, with love locks falling over her shoulders. (This hair style solidly dates the image to the second half of the 1790s, as by 1800, French ladies were cutting their hair off for the first time in history as a post-Revolutionary statement, and as France set the barometer for fashion all over Europe, English ladies soon copied this short-lived trend.) In high Neoclassical style, she also holds an ancient-style lyre. SO CHARMING!
Our sitter is depicted in a garden, with a pink and blue sky highlighting the sun setting on the horizon. What is truly astounding about this jewel is that the miniature is just as fresh as the day it was first worn by a lady of wealth and fashion well over two centuries ago; there are no chips, damage or restoration to the enamel! The plaque is housed in its original 18k rose gold locket, which is backed with copper gilt (gold unmarked but tested). Needless to say, this charming jewel looks wonderful worn with anything from blue jeans to a cocktail dress, and the subject is oh-so-desirable!
