Dating to c.1790-1800, this beautiful Georgian locket pendant boasts six different hair tokens in a timeless, high-karat jewel!
Measuring 2" with the original bail and 1 3/4" in diameter for the locket alone, this brilliant sentimental locket commemorates seven different members of the same family! The locket is wrought from 15k gold (unmarked but tested), and takes the large, round shape characteristic of lockets dating from 1790-1810. The locket also boasts stunning white and blue guilloche enamel around the border, another element of style which fits perfectly into the minimalist, Neoclassical fashions of the late 1790s!
Note that this is not an example of mourning jewelry; there is nothing funereal about this locket - in fact, the blue and white enamel indicate that this is a sentimental jewel, set with seven different hair tokens, likely all from the same family. The hair tokens are set in an unusual "bull's eye" design, and the hair tokens range from dark blonde to chestnut brown to auburn to light blonde with threads of gray! Perhaps it was made for a lady of fashion whose children or other family members moved far away? The answer is lost to time, but this locket remains untouched after over two centuries of very careful wear!
The hair lockets are set against a ground of milk glass, and both sides of the locket retain their original crystals. The reverse of the locket is empty, and is covered with a swatch of white silk. The tab at the top of the locket retains it's original 15k gold bail, which is large enough for a wear on a thicker gold chain. This jewel has made it through 215+ years in excellent condition. The blue guilloche and white enamel are near-perfect; there are two minuscule repairs to the enamel, but the restoration is excellent. I have set my price with this bit of wear in mind, but it does not detract from the value or appearance of this historic locket!
Weighing in at 17.49 grams, this is a substantial and romantic example of Georgian sentimental jewelry that is suitable for day or evening wear. The simplicity of the design ensures that it will never go out of style, and the setting of the hair tokens give this early locket a surprisingly modern look! If you collect the BEST in Georgian jewelry, this locket belongs around your neck and in your collection! It would also make a thrilling gift for any lady fond of the finest in historic jewelry.
