Dating to c.1830, this magnificent, three-color pinchbeck and chalcedony bracelet is a beautifully-wearable jewel in all-original condition!
Measuring 6 2/3" wearable length x 1 1/2" wide, this bracelet epitomizes all that is so wonderful about jewelry of the 1820s and 1830s! Wrought from pinchbeck and copper gilt with appliques of Bath metal and panels of natural white chalcedony, this gorgeous bracelet is a tour de force of the early 19th-century lapidary's craft!
This bracelet consists of four hourglass-shaped plaques of white chalcedony, each set in ornate, cut work collets of pinchbeck. As most collectors know, pinchbeck is an alloy crafted in the 1740s, and the finest gold substitute ever invented. But wait; this jewel also boasts beautiful, narrow copper-gilt links with central highlights of ungilded copper, and appliques on the four main panels in the form of "wreaths" of white Bath metal! (Bath metal was invented in the 1760s, and is to silver what pinchbeck is to gold; it has the appearance of sterling silver, but is made from an alloy of brass and tin!) The result is a three-colored jewel accented with luminous chalcedony plaques in high Gothic revival style!
Best of all, this bracelet has made it to the 21st-century in as fine a condition as the most discerning collector could hope for. There are no losses or replacements to the intricate metalwork, and all four of the hard stone plaques are pristine! This bracelet looks just as impressive today as when it first graced the arm of a lady of fashion over 185 years ago! This bracelet has not been cleaned, and boasts a fabulous age patina that only the passing of centuries can impart. SO IMPRESSIVE!
Simply an exquisite and rare example of late-Georgian jewelry, this exquisite bracelet looks fabulous on the arm, and the three colors of "gold" and "silver" are nothing short of phenomenal! It weighs in at 38.73 grams, and is oh-so-lovely on the arm! If you collect the BEST in early jewelry, this bracelet belongs on your arm and in your collection! It would also make a thrilling gift for any lady who cherishes the best in historic jewelry, and will be shipped in a gift box.
