Dating to c.1760-1770, this rare Georgian witches crowned heart and arrow brooch is a beautifully-made example of 18th-century sentimental jewelry!

Measuring a large 1 1/2" x 1 1/4", this grand English stunner is a rarity; most witches hearts of this era are either simply-designed hearts, or hearts with crowns, but this beauty is pierced with a garnet-set arrow! Wrought from sterling-grade silver, this jewel is set with cushion-shaped white pastes, each of which displays the "black spot" of pitch at the culet characteristic of 18th-century craftsmanship. The crown of the heart is set with alternating pastes and flat-cut garnets, and the arrow which pierces the heart is pave-set with genuine red garnets for added sparkle and color!

This heart also boasts the little "dip" to the right associated with witches hearts; this design dates back to the 16th century, although most extant examples date to the 18th- and 19th centuries. This brooch is considerably larger than most later ones I have handled, in keeping with the lush, Rococo fashions of the 1760s. All of the stones are set in foiled, closed-backed collets of sterling grade silver, and all are original to this incredible, 250+ year old jewel! SIMPLY BEWITCHING!

The only sign of restoration to this cunning heart is the "T and C" clasp, which was replaced c.1840, likely when the original wore out after nearly a century of wear. The original pin finding would have been set at an angle, but this late-Georgian replacement actually make this jewel easier to wear! Whomever did the conversion some 175 years ago was an excellent jeweler, as the jewel is still very clean; there is just one tiny spot of solder behind the "T" bar which is only visible under 10x magnification. The sterling "guard chain" was likely added at the same time. Otherwise, this brooch shows the only gentlest wear, and is just as lovely as when it was first worn on the gown of an English lady of fashion in the 1760s!

This brooch lights up anything you choose to wear it with, and will add glamour and romance to any lapel or sweater! Moreover, it is a highly-desirable mid-18th century jewel that will always be a classic! If you collect the best in Georgian sentimental jewelry, this brooch will take pride of place in your collection! It would also make a romantic gift for any lady fond of the finest in historic jewelry, and will be shipped in a gift box. Do not miss this bewitching beauty; up to 30-day layaway is available, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
