Dating to c.1675-1685, I am thrilled to present this outstanding heart-shaped Stuart crystal inscribed with a Latin posy for the consideration of my Ruby Lane clientele!
Measuring 1" long x 3/4" wide, this is the second of the two heart-shaped Stuart crystals which I acquired on my recent buying trip to London, and it is certain to steal your heart as it did mine! As most collectors know, heart-shaped Stuart crystals are the rarest among the rare, and this one boasts an inscription on the reverse!
Wrought from 22k gold, this gorgeous memorial jewel has made it through 330+ years in 100% intact, all-original condition, and displays an exceptionally pretty, completely "rose faceted" crystal, with extra facets sparkling all around the border! Set beneath this ornate crystal is a tightly-woven swatch of light brown hair bordered with gold thread, as well as scallops of gold wire around the heart. The gold wire is set against a woven red fabric, as is typical for Stuart crystals dating to the 17th century. The plainness of the front of the jewel may indicate a Puritan origin; even wealthy Puritans who followed trends in mourning jewelry would have likely eschewed images such as angels, skulls, or crowns.
However, this is far from a plain jewel; the border of the crystal, which usually displays simple, pie crust edge work, is engraved with very Baroque palmettes, and the bail is also engraved, showing traces of black enamel under high magnification! The real treat is on the reverse of this elegant heart; it boasts a Latin posy, as well as the initials of the deceased!
The back of the heart is engraved with the Latin posy "Dum hoc tenes, Alterum memento" and the initials "K. F." in copperplate italics. This translates to "Remember (me) when you hold this." Such a touching remembrance; one has to wonder who made this poignant sentimental jewel honoring the departed "K.F.," and the history it has seen over the past three plus centuries!
Best of all, this Stuart crystal has made it into the 21st-century in 100% intact condition, and is just as wearable today as when it was worn close to the heart of it's original owner in the last third of the 17th century! It looks radiant worn on a high-karat gold chain, and the faceted crystal shimmers with every angle of the light! Remember, most Stuart crystals were fashioned as slides rather than pendants, making them a challenge for the modern lady to wear. Not so with this jewel; it has always been a pendant! JUST SPECTACULAR!
Weighing in at 4.46 grams, this stunning Stuart crystal is certain to become one of your "go to" pieces of early jewelry; it looks superb worn with anything from blue jeans to a cocktail dress, and what a history! If you collect the NE PLUS ULTRA in these earliest of memorial jewels, this winsome tribute to "K.F." belongs around your neck and in your collection! It would also make a thrilling gift for anyone fascinated with 17th century sentimental jewelry, and will be shipped in a gift box. As with all of my jewelry pre-dating 1700, this pendant will be sold with a COA and valuation for your insurance purposes at no extra charge.
