Dating to c.1795-1805, this Neoclassical hardstone and high-karat scent pendant is a wonderfully-wearable rarity!
Measuring 1 1/4" long from the top of it's bail x 1" wide x 1/2" thick, this cunning scent bottle is wrought from polished carnelian and picture agate cabochons mounted in 15k rose gold (unmarked but tested)! Unlike most vinaigrettes of this era, this little jewel is a bottle in and of itself, with a hinged, hand-wrought gold cap!
Vinaigrettes and perfume-infused jewels have a long history, going back to the Tudor era, when ladies would suspend "musk apples" filled with spices, musk, and ambergris to keep the unpleasant smells of the city streets at bay. These became miniaturized in the 18th century, and this later example is about as fresh as they come! The two stone cabochons make up the body of the bottle, and are mounted in cut-down collets of 15k rose gold (unmarked but tested). The top of the pendant opens to reveal a compartment which holds the original bit of wool which a lady could scent by adding a few drops of rose oil, or whatever scent took her fancy!
The scent bottle is mounted with two golden chains leading up to the pendant bail; these chains test to 22k gold, and may be early replacements, but they are contemporary to the pendant. Today, with the aid of a perfume funnel, you could re-awaken this useful and historic jewel by adding a few drops of your favorite perfume! Weighing in at 8.15 grams, this jewel has made it through over 215 years in 100% intact condition, with no damage to the stones or to the gold. (Please note that the side with the picture agate has inclusions close to the surface; these are not cracks.) QUITE IMPRESSIVE!
Simply a charming example of functional Georgian-era jewelry, this pretty jewel looks lovely worn on a fine gold chain, and can be dressed up or down! If you collect the best in Regency-era jewelry, this beauty belongs around your neck and in your collection! It would also make a stellar gift for any lady fond of vinaigrettes or scent bottles, and will be shipped in a gift box. Do not miss this lovely and unique jewel from the age of Jane Austen; up to 30-day layaway is available, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
