Dating to c.1750-1780 for the hardstone cameo and c.1910 for the 15k gold setting, this mask-motif jewel is a Neoclassical treasure!
Measuring 1/2" x 5/8" across the bezel, this marvelous ring boasts a rare Neoclassical cameo of a delightfully grotesque theatre mask! In this case, the term "grotesque" is used in the classical sense, meaning a face which has uniquely dramatic features and a fierce expression. This Georgian cameo is hand carved in golden jasper, which has a matte surface and really brings out the details in this fantastic image!
The mask features lidded eyes, a furrowed brow, a broad, almost comical nose, and an open mouth with a tongue sticking out! The expression is that of a grimace, but one that is satirical rather than serious. The face also displays a curl of hair over the forehead and two locks of hair on either side of the head; this fellow is clearly going bald! The facial features are second-to-none, and I am certain that this cameo was carved by an 18th-century master!
The cameo is set in the rubbed-over, closed-backed setting of 15k gold (unmarked but tested). The shank is a simple hoop, in keeping with the style of early Neoclassical rings of the 1770s. Suitable for wear by a lady or as a fascinating pinky ring for a gentleman, this ring is a size 7, but could easily be re-sized by a good bench jeweler for little cost. This is by far the most impressive Neoclassical jewel I have discovered in some time, and is just the sort of rarity that I would love to keep for my own collection of rare, 18th-century cameos, but one cannot keep it all and pay the bills!
Best of all, this cameo has made it through 240+ years in magnificent, 100% intact condition, with no chips, damage or restoration. The Edwardian ring mounting is also pristine. If you collect the BEST in Georgian-era jewelry, this one-of-a-kind ring belongs on your hand and in your collection! It would also make a stellar gift for any lady or gentleman who cherishes the rare and wonderful in 18th century cameos, and will be shipped in a gift box. Do not miss this incredible jewel; up to 60-day layaway is available, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
