Dating to c.1870-1880, this rare Austrian ring boasts a fabulous natural heart-shaped emerald and rubies in a very Tudor Revival silver setting!
Measuring 9 mm wide x 20 mm across the bezel, this lover's jewel is a rare delight! One of the many things which make this ring unique is that the setting is crafted from .800 silver rather than gold, which is the metal one would expect to find in a ring with untreated gemstones of this high quality! However, from 1839-1866, Austria was involved in a number of international wars which severely depleted their gold supply, and the jewelry we now associate with the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1866 until the end of the century was almost universally wrought from silver in three different grades of purity.
The real star of this ring is the outstanding heart-shaped emerald, which is set in an open-backed, rubbed over collet of .800 grade silver. The gemstone measures 5 mm x 5 mm x 3.4 mm and weighs a calculated 45 points! The emerald is a delightful shade of bright grass green, with the undertone of blue which indicates a Colombian origin; this is the color that emerald-lovers crave! The emerald is 100% untreated, and displays a lovely jardin.
Set to either side of the emerald heart are two natural ruby "sparks" weighing approx. 2 points each, which give this ring just the right amount of "pop!" The bezel and shoulders are cast and finished by hand, as one can see from the tool marks still in evidence. Acanthus leaves and scroll work abound; this ring was modeled after 16th-century examples, and looks nothing short of marvelous on the hand! The shank tapers back to a plain, substantial hoop, and the hallmark (whippet's head, numeral 3 for .800 silver, and letter A for Vienna) is on the outside of the shank, indicating that it has never suffered re-sizing! The other side of the shank is stamped with the maker's initials, "S.A."
In fact, this ring is in as fine a condition as one might hope for, as there is no damage, repairs or losses to either the gems or the mounting! This ring is a size 7 1/2, and could be conservatively re-sized, but I suggest doing this only by laser, as the silver setting would be vulnerable to high heat. This ring weighs 3.32 grams.
If you collect the finest in Austro-Hungarian or Victorian love jewelry, this ring belongs on your hand and in your collection! It would also make a stellar gift for any fond of the finest in emerald rings, and will be shipped in a gift box.
