Dating to c.1860-1870, this High Victorian ring is a one-of-a-kind stunner!
Measuring 3/4" in diameter across and standing 6.5 mm proud of the shank, the bezel of this hand-crafted ring boasts a large rose de Freance amethyst inset with sparkling rose-cut diamonds, and topped by a creamy white natural pearl! This jewel has a positively cunning design; the amethyst is "dish cut" to allow for the mounting of the diamond and pearl "snowflake" in the center, and is faceted at the edge for maximum sparkle!
The amethyst measures 18mm in diameter, and weighs approx. 12 carats. Set into the center of this large gemstone are six rose-cut diamond "sparks" weighing approx. 3 points each. All of the diamonds are bead-set into 15k gold florets, and are topped with a bright, white 3mm pearl. The stone is set closed at the back, with a tiny silver pin and nut securing the diamond and pearl elements. The back of the bezel is closed and convex at the rear, protecting the back of this convex-cut gemstone.
The shank is a wonderful, hand-wrought band comprised of elegantly flattened and twisted gold wire, and measures approx. 2.3 mm wide. The amethyst is set into it's own "cup" of 15k gold. (all gold unmarked, but tested). Best of all, this ring has made it through over 145 years in delightful, all original condition, and has never even suffered re-sizing! The amethyst is perfect, without damage or chips.
This ring makes a lovely statement on the hand, and is just as fresh as when it was first sported by a lady of wealth and fashion in the 1860s! All of the gold tests to 15k but is unmarked, leading me to believe that this ring was specially-commissioned by an English lady. Weighing in at 4.86 grams, this is a substantial jewel that makes a perfect statement ring suitable for day or evening wear! Simply a rare example of a high-Victorian ring, this sparkler looks great worn with anything from blue jeans to a business suit!
If you collect the best in Victorian jewelry, this unique jewel belongs on your hand and in your collection!
