Dating to c.1810-1820, this superb Regency-era brooch is packed with shimmering gemstones, and is a happy reminder that summer is here!
Measuring 1 1/2" x 1 3/8", this magnificent brooch boasts a giant lemon-hued citrine surrounded by stunning medium-violet amethysts, all set in high-karat gold! Taking center stage is the citrine, which the most delicious shade of lemon yellow! This mixed-cut stone measures 21 mm x 15.5 mm x 8.5 mm and weighs a calculated 15.36 carats on it's own! Surrounding the citrine are 12 natural amethysts, which average 6 mm x 5 mm and weigh a calculated 1.5 carats each! That adds up to 33.36 carats of glowing Georgian gemstones!
But wait; it gets even better! All of the gemstones are securely mounted in crimped, saw tooth collets of 20k yellow gold, and the frame is further embellished with tiny cannetille rosettes and bead work along the edge (all gold unmarked but tested)! This brooch was made just as the finest lapidaries were setting stones "a jour" or open at the back. This feature, as well as the use of 20k gold indicates that the jeweler who crafted this piece was a top-of-the-line goldsmith! JUST FABULOUS!
Perhaps best of all, this brooch has made it through two centuries in such fine condition that it retains it's original safety chain! The chain attaches to the top of the brooch with a small bail; if one so desired, the safety chain could be temporarily removed, and this radiant brooch can be worn as a pendant! Moreover, this elegant pendant/brooch is in as fine a condition as the most discerning collector could hope for! All of the stones are original, the gemstones are all intact, and the gold is perfect! The piece weighs 8.59 grams.
