Dating to c.1870, this fabulous Indian jewel is packed with over two and a half carats of shimmering rose-cut diamonds!
Measuring 1 3/4" x 1 3/4", this beautiful pendant was wrought in India, and was likely crafted as a forehead jewel for an Indian lady of wealth and fashion, but today, it make a superb pendant! It is wrought from low-karat gold (tests to about 8k) which has been fire-gilded with 18k gold! This elegant pendant features beautiful hand-sawn and pierced gold work in an abstract peacock's tail motif, and is highly three-dimensional, as the plaques of gold are set one on top of the other for a fabulous Victorian-era look that is second to none!
Best of all, this pendant is chock-a-block with rose-cut diamonds! The top tier of the pendant is set with a rose-cut diamond measuring 4.5 mm and weighing approx. 15 points. The second tier is set with eight rose-cut diamonds measuring 3 mm and weighing approx. 5 points each. The third tier is set with 10 rose cut diamonds measuring 3.8 mm and weighing approx. 10 points each. The peacock's "tail" is set with an additional 20 rose-cut diamonds measuring 3 mm each and weighing approx. 5 points each, and one 5 point rose-cut diamond is set on the bail. That adds up to 2.6 carats of shimmering antique diamonds!
All of the diamonds are intact and original to the jewel, which shoots off deep fire in any light! Each diamond is set in an individual closed-backed collet of 8k gold. As most collectors know, antique diamonds cannot be graded according to modern GIA standards. Antique rose-cut diamonds have a special radiance all their own, and this pendant shows them off to wonderful effect. Best of all, all 40 diamonds are original to this jewel, which has made it into the 21st-century free of damage, replacements or repairs!
The back of the pendant displays elegant engraving to the gold, as is characteristic of Indian jewelry of the second half of the 19th century. The two top tiers also rotate, and are secured with a golden tab on the reverse. This jewel looks fabulous worn with anything from blue jeans to a ball gown, and looks as lovely today as when it was first worn by an Indian lady of fashion over 140 years ago! The pendant weighs 7.76 grams.
Simply a wonderful example of Indian jewelry, this historic pendant looks smashing worn on a gold chain, and the combination of bright fire-gilding and diamonds are oh-so-special! If you love the finest in Victorian-era jewelry, this jewel belongs in your collection! It would also make a stellar gift for any lady who loves antique diamond jewelry, and will be shipped in a gift box. Most dealers would price this jewel at well over $2500, but I got a good deal, so why shouldn't you?
