Dating to 1788, this pendant was crafted to commemorate the coronation of King Charles IV of Spain, and is a rare example of 18th century royal memorabilia!
Measuring a perfectly-proportioned 2 1/2" x 1", this important jewel takes the form of an oval-shaped locket, and is crafted from sterling-grade silver (unmarked but tested). On first glance, it look a bit like a mourning jewel, but the plaque on the inside reads "CORONAMI ENTO DE CARLOS IV" (Coronation memento of King Carlos IV)! Charles IV (Spanish: Carlos Antonio Pascual Francisco Javier Juan Nepomuceno José Januario Serafín Diego; 11 November 1748 – 20 January 1819) was King of Spain from 14 December 1788 until his abdication on 19 March 1808. This jewel would have been commissioned for people attending the coronation as personal guests, and indeed, there is a tiny wax crown placed above the inscription, as well as a collection of seed pearls and colored beads which may have been taken from the coronation robes of King Carlos himself!
The ground of the locket is enameled in royal blue, and the pendant retains its original domed crystal. The frame is bezeled with a bright halo of bright, lively white pastes. All of the pastes display the "black spot" of pitch used in centering the stones. The bail appears to have been added at a later date, but is decorated with a cluster of period pastes, and the tiny suspended pearl is original to the jewel. JUST SPLENDID!
Suitable for wear by a 21st-century lady or gentleman, this rare piece of Spanish history is 100% intact, although some of the contents have been shaken loose over the last 228 years. I have taken this bit of wear into account when setting my price. This is nevertheless an important jewel, and the only coronation jewel for King Charles IV I have ever beheld, in reference books, or out! The pendant weighs 11.14 grams.
Simply a highly-desirable example of 18th-century royal jewelry, this jewel is a joy to wear, and what a history! If you love the finest in Spanish royal souvenirs or early jewelry, this pendant belongs around your neck and in your collection! It would also make a thrilling gift for anyone fascinated with Spanish royalty, and will be shipped in a gift box.
