Dating to c.1840-1850, his early Victorian coral bead and carved cameo necklace is a Grand Tour treasure!

Measuring 16 1/2" wearable length, this is easily the prettiest and most wearable example of Victorian coral jewelry to come may way in many a season! This superb jewel features two strands of hand-cut and hand-polished Italian coral beads graduated in size from 3.5 mm for the largest to 2 mm for the smallest! The real star here is the magnificent, hand-carved cameo clasp of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and revelry!

The clasp measures 1 1/2" long x 3/4" wide, and is mounted in 16k gold, with elegant, hand-wrought gold true lover's knots above and below! The cameo is a treasure in and of itself; it features the face of Bacchus looking straight out at the viewer! The face of the Roman god is depicted in exquisite detail, with lidded eyes and a subtle smile. He wears a profusion of grapes and grape leaves in his curling hair. Even the top of the cameo is carved; this detail would not be seen when the necklace is worn, but is indicative of the finest workmanship of the early Victorian era!

Best of all, this necklace has made it into the 21st-century in as fine a condition as he most discerning collector could hope for! The cameo is 100% intact, and is heavily backed with a frame of 16k yellow gold ("16" and maker's hallmark to clasp; tested). The "tongue-in-groove" clasp fastens securely. This jewel looks nothing short of gorgeous on the neck; the two strands of coral beads sit "just so," with the cameo as the focal point. The beads are a lovely shade of soft salmon, while the cameo is a slightly deeper red, as is typical with the finest Italian carved coral cameos of this period. JUST BEAUTIFUL!

Weighing in at 22.12 grams, this jewel is just as pretty on today as when it first graced the neck of a lady of wealth and fashion c.1850, and is as pristine as it gets; the beads have likely been re-strung over the past 165 years, but all of the elements are original to the necklace. If you collect the finest in Victorian Grand Tour coral jewelry, this beauty belongs around your neck and in your collection! It would also make a thrilling gift for any lady fond of the finest in antique coral necklaces, and will be shipped in a gift box. Do not miss this one-of-a-kind discovery; up to 60-day layaway is available, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
