Dating to c.1825-1835, these lovely carnation-pink paste earrings are just waiting to be added to your spring and summer wardrobe!
Measuring 1 1/2" long from the tops of their 14k ear wires x 1/2" at their widest points, these gorgeous late-Georgian paste earrings are both a joy to behold and a delight to wear! These jewels likely began their 185+ year history as part of a larger jewel, but sometime in the late 19th-century, they were expertly-converted to the earrings you see here with the addition of 9k rose gold ear wires! This elegant pair of earrings boast a top pink topaz paste measuring 10 mm x 5 mm an weighing approx. 1.2 "carats" each. Beneath this gem is a second, larger pink topaz paste measuring 22 mm x 10 mm x 7 mm and weighing a calculated 11 "carats" each!
These stones are claw- and collet-set in bright pinchbeck; that finest of all gold substitutes invented by Sir Christopher Pinchbeck in the 1720s. This alloy, which gives the appearance and heft of 20k gold, yet does not wear through, disappears after 1840, when it was replaced by the less labor-intensive gold electroplating process. All four paste gemstones are set in profusely decorated, open-backed collets. The smaller pastes are held by eight golden bifurcated claws, and the larger stones are secured by 16 scallop-motif claws. The frames are nothing short of a wonder in and of themselves; they boast cast flowers and engraving all around, and are finished with a small cast rosette!
These earrings have made it into the 21st-century in excellent condition, with no chips or scratches to the pastes or damage of any kind. They are oh-so-beautiful on the ear, and are suitable for day or evening wear; they will take you from the office to the opera in high 1830s style! Collectors know how rare it is to find Georgian paste earrings in this delicate shade of petal pink; you could not do much better than these lovely jewels! Together, they weigh 7.53 grams, and are very comfortable on the ear. SO PRETTY!
