Dating to c.1855-1865, this is one stunning and highly-wearable example of Victorian jewelry!
Measuring 1 1/4" long x 1" wide across the garnet-set top and tapering to just hair over 1/4" wide at the back, this delightful English bracelet features a stunning garnet carbuncle as well as lovely Etruscan Revival detail work! The top of this jewel is set with a natural rhodolite garnet of a lovely shade of red with hints of violet. The garnet measures 14mm x 10 mm x 4 mm and weighs a calculated 5.91 carats. This gemstone is set in a rubbed-over collet of 15k gold, and set into the lovely recessed frame which is edged with delightful beadwork!
The shoulders of the bracelet boast a three-dimensional Etruscan revival motif, and the hinges are accented with delicate hand-engraving. The rear of the garnet-set panel also reveals a secret locket compartment for a photograph, topped with its original crystal and bezel! The earliest photographs were very expensive, and much of the earliest jewelry intended to hold photos were crafted from high-karat gold. Later in the 1860s, most photographic jewelry would be gold filled or plated. This is an exquisite example of the former; although unmarked, it tests to 15k gold!
This bracelet has survived over 160 years in excellent condition. There are no losses, repairs or damage to this beautiful, mid-Victorian bracelet. The only signs of wear are a few dimples to the gold; this is perfectly in keeping with a bracelet of this great age, which was certainly handled with kid gloves for many generations! I have set my asking price with this bit of natural wear in mind. The bracelet currently holds a photo of a turn-of-the-20th century gentleman, but you could easily replace it with one of your own! Note that the locket is hidden from public view; again, this is typical of early photographic jewelry, as the photo was considered to be a private affair, and "for the wearer's eyes only!" SO ROMANTIC!
As with most Victorian bracelets, this pretty sentimental jewel is small in size, and will fit a wrist up to 6 1/2". Weighing in at 13.54 grams, it is quite a sturdy bracelet, and looks oh-so-wonderful on the arm! This bracelet has not been cleaned, and the gold has developed a rich "bloom" which only the passing of generations can impart. The combination of the rich bloomed gold and the vibrant garnet is second-to-none!
If you love the best in fine Victorian jewelry, this fabulous bracelet belongs on your arm and in your collection! It would also make a thrilling gift for any lady fond of the finest in antique gold and garnets, and will be shipped in a gift box.
