Dating to c.1810, this is one of the most uniquely-beautiful Georgian rings I have acquired in some time, and I am thrilled to present it for the consideration of my Ruby Lane clientele!
Measuring 5/8" x 1/2" across the box-style bezel, this ring would have been custom-made for Georgian-era lady of wealth and fashion, and I have never seen another like it, in or out of reference books! The star of this ring is the superb, old-cut oval violet sapphire, which measures 9.7 mm x 7.1 mm x 4.6 mm and weighs a calculated 2.61 carats!
When I first saw this luscious gemstone, I thought that it was a Siberian amethyst, but this is OH-SO MUCH more impressive! It lab-tested as corundum, and given the age of the ring, this radiant purple gem with flashes of fuchsia is an outstanding, untreated stone; this color comes straight from Mother Nature! The vibrancy of the sapphire is enhanced by a dark violet foil, which makes this stone shoot magenta fire from ever angle!
The sapphire is bezeled in a closed-backed mounting of 12k rose gold (unmarked but tested). Bordering the sapphire is a halo of sand-sized micromosaic flowers in shades of blue, red, yellow, pink, green, black and white. The tessarae are in generally excellent condition, without losses; there is only a bit of wear which can only be seen under 10x magnification. This is perfectly acceptable in a ring over 200 years old, and does not detract from its appearance or inherent value. The bezel measures 5 mm thick, and the ring displays forked shoulders and the double-hoop shank often seen in rings of this decade.
This ring is a size 5 1/4, and appears to have been re-sized once, likely when it was inherited by a near relation to the original owner, as it is an early sizing. Weighing in at 4.92 grams, this is a substantial ring for it's size, and looks nothing short of magnificent on the hand! The sapphire is set nearly flush to the micromosiac border, which has helped ensure it against damage and facet wear. JUST SPECTACULAR!
If you collect the BEST in Georgian jewelry, this ring belongs on your hand and in your collection! Most fine antique jewelry boutiques would price this ring at over $5000; I got a good deal, so why shouldn't you? It would also make a very special gift for any lady fond of the best in antique sapphire jewelry, and will be shipped in a gift box. Do not miss this Regency masterpiece; up to 60-day layaway is available, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
