Dating to c.1865-1875, this beautiful faceted rock crystal brooch is a wonderful example of Victorian sentimental jewelry, and is highly-wearable today!
Measuring 1 1/4" in diameter x just over 3/8" thick, this splendid brooch is hand-carved from rock crystal, and is pin-set with a beautifully-enameled silver gilt pansy in the center! In the Victorian language of flowers, the pansy stood for fond thoughts; this is a play on the French word "pensee," or "to think (of someone)." This brooch boasts a stunning pansy enameled in shades of blue, white and gold, and gives the perfect splash of color to this radiant brooch! The rock crystal faceted both above and below, and is bezeled in an open-backed frame of sterling-grade silver (unmarked but tested). This jewel would have been given to a lady by her gentleman admirer or sweetheart, as the pansy indicates that she is always in his thoughts! SO ROMANTIC!
Rock crystal brooches of this sort were usually set with insects in the 1860s and 1870s; this is the first sentimental example I have discovered! This brooch is in as fine a condition as the most discerning collector could hope for; there are NO chips, scratches, or nibbles to the rock crystal, and the silver gilt and enamel pansy is 100% intact! The pansy is set with a pin, which allows it to rotate. The reverse of the brooch retains its original "T and C" clasp with the pin protruding 1/4" past the frame as a "keeper." In fact, this jewel is just as fresh today as when it was first worn by a lady of fashion in the early 1870s!
Best of all, this is one highly-wearable brooch; it lights up on a lapel or a sweater, and the faceted rock crystal really glitters! Weighing in at 15.24 grams, this is a substantial, top-quality Victorian brooch which has transcended the whims of fashion, and will make a superb addition to any modern lady's jewelry wardrobe. If you collect the exceptional in antique sentimental jewelry, this brooch belongs in your collection! It would also make a lovely gift fro that special lady who is always in your thoughts, and will be shipped in a gift box.
